The AcadeCap Virtual Career Fair took place during the week of February 22nd to 26th. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we couldn’t have our regular on-site career fair and so parents, teachers, and community members composed pre-recorded videos for our students, based on questions that students had about careers of interest to them. Some live online guests were also invited into the classrooms. We would like to thank our wonderful parents, teachers, students community members, alumni, and friends of AcadeCap who all contributed to make this event a success!
On March 2, 2020, during our Writer's Craft course, we had the opportunity to learn from Claire Stott, a technical writer in the engineering department at NAV Canada. Throughout the informative session, she taught us about the meticulous process that is writing. Organization, precision, and clarity all need to work cohesively throughout her profession for matters to work smoothly. This workshop showed our class that so-called “simple” exercises, when analyzed deeply, are the most complex tasks. Try writing a clear and thorough instruction on how to make a peanut butter sandwich, to someone who has never done it before! Our answers varied!
Last week was the annual Acadecap Science Fair. PSSP students presented their iSTEAM Fair experiments to teachers and judges. This year, the Science Fair was held virtually.
Students, teachers and parents appreciate the great work done by our judges : - GARRY M. LINDBERG: Project Manager of the CANADARM (Space Shuttle Attached Remote Manipulator System) (1974), Director of the National Aeronautical Establishment (Division of the National Research Council) (1979), Vice-President at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Vice-President & Chief Scientist/Engineer of the CSA (1995). Dr. Lindberg was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2017 for his contributions to Canadian achievements in space, notably for his role in the Canadarm and astronaut programs. He holds a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Alberta, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Cambridge, England. - ARVIND CHHATBAR: Founder and former Chairman and CEO of Enablence Technologies Inc., an optical chip company he took public in 2005. He was responsible for a number of technology spin-offs and also created networking organizations such as Indo-Canada Ottawa Business Chamber (ICOBC) as well as re-skilling programs for engineers and scientists when he was instrumental in creating Vitesse Reskilling Canada Inc. He also served on the Board of Governors of Carleton University. He holds an M.A. from Carleton University and an MBA from University of Ottawa. This year, as part of the Metabolic Processes Unit, the Biology 12 students completed the 2020-2021 Ottawa University Science and Innovation Challenge. Their task was to write a research proposal tackling a question related to aging and health span optimization. The students chose to look at Diabetes mellitus Type 2 and the age-protective effects of the “klotho” protein.
The AcadeCap Civics students are passionate about climate change! For their culminating project they chose to explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13: take urgent action to combat climate change.
The students used the political inquiry process and their critical thinking skills learned in the first part of the course to research and analyze how food consumption and food production contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. They proceeded with an analysis of policy documents at the International, Federal, Provincial, and Municipal levels to determine the guidance offered in the policies and to discover any possible gaps. To do this they, read through the policies, completed research, and read current news articles on the topic. Then they collaborated to create an action plan. Their action plan involved an analysis of their current food carbon footprint using the BBC food carbon footprint calculator. They analysed the methodology of the calculator to better understand its limitations and then set a goal for themselves to reduce their food ecological footprint by 25%. As a group, they were able to do this by each making only one change to their favourite food choices. Their action project is posted on the Move the Day Solution Map. The students invite everyone in the AcadeCap community to use the calculator to determine their food’s carbon footprint and then make the changes necessary to reduce their food footprint by 25% before Earth Day, April 22, 2021. https://movethedate.overshootday.org/647503-acadecap-school-wide-project-take-a-step-toward-climate-action?fcat=6555,6556,8089&lat=45.34662217337614&lng=-75.79093873500825&zoom=17 https://www.bbc.com/future/bespoke/follow-the-food/calculate-the-environmental-footprint-of-your-food.html |
