Our students in grade 7 to 11 are involved in units related to Indigenous studies, during English class. The grade 7/8 class is reading Touching Spirit Bear, and researching the Tlingit people and the Spirit Bears of the Great Bear Rainforest. The grade 9 to 11 students are reading Indian Horse, by Richard Wagamese, and participating in Truth and Reconciliation week activites and watching a variety of videos on Curio.ca. Stay tuned for some of their poems and photos of some of their creations at the end of the unit.
Biology 11 students practise using and constructing dichotomous keys. Dichotomous keys are one type of classification system used by Biologists to identify organisms. They consist of two-part branching statements and are based on the organisms' morphological characteristics. Students learn about the advantages and limitations of this type of classification and explore alternatives, such as phylogenetic classification, a classification system based on evolutionary relationships.
Bon vote ! Mme Aicha In their first unit, the Biology 11 students will be learning about the diversity of living things. During their first biodiversity lab, students refreshed their knowledge about the parts and function of a stereo microscope. They then practiced using the microscope to observe features of various biological organisms. We discussed the application and importance of microscope work when classifying and identifying organisms. Throughout unit 1, the students will continue to hone their practical lab skills while building their understanding of how biological assessment, monitoring, and classification contribute to our knowledge and understanding of current world issues such as the loss of biodiversity and the effects of climate change on biological organisms and ecosystems.
This week the educational team is busy preparing for the back to school by participating in meetings and workshops.
