Biological drawings are used to communicate microscopic and macroscopic observations. Biology 11 students use a checklist to ensure that their drawings are accurate, clear, well labelled, and easy to understand. Drawings must be proportional and include magnification and scale.
Here is an example that was drawn during our recent Protist Lab. Students observed living organisms and prepared microscope slides from the Kingdom Protista. This one is from the genus Spirogyra, a common filamentous, plant-like protist living in our local ponds.

As part of the requirement to graduate with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, all high school students must participate in COVID safe volunteering to collect 40 hours of volunteer experience prior to their graduation. AcadeCap has made volunteering easy this year with some volunteer roles that can be done by students before school and during breaks. For example, one of our science-loving students has taken on the role of Assistant Animal Crew Supervisor. One of his jobs will be to maintain the school’s fresh and saltwater aquariums. He will receive some training, learn about aquarium care and maintenance, assist in daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks, and create an instruction manual for other crew members. Later in the year, he will have opportunities to share his knowledge and expertise through a COVID safe science presentation to other students.
At AcadeCap, we pride ourselves on assisting the students to develop the skills they will need for success in the 21st Century job market. Part of this process is participating in the AcadeCap TED-Ed Student Talks Program. AcadeCap partnerships with TED-Ed to provide the program at our school for students in Grades 5 through 8. Here are some infographics created by the Grade 7 and 8 students to illustrate their understanding of what makes an idea worth sharing. A great idea is the foundation of a great TED-Ed Talk. The students will use their checklists later in the program to assess their own talk ideas. |
