The pre-secondary and secondary students were excited to head to the Ottawa Regional Science Fair taking place at Carleton University this past weekend. Students competed in the junior and intermediate categories and were judged for some of the special awards. Our students won an honourable mention at the intermediate level and second place at the junior level.

Science 7/8 students are heading to the Let’s Talk Science Engineering Challenge held at Carleton University, where they will join other students in the final competition on April 25th, 2024.  They will compete in the ultimate STEM knowledge quiz, the final engineering problem-solving challenge, and the Lorna Collins Spirit challenge. 

​Our Science 7/8 students were in the AcadeCap maker space working on their science project data collection in preparation for the upcoming AcadeCap PSSP/OSSD iSTEAM Fair on March 4th.  This offered a great opportunity for the PYP students to visit, watch the demos, and ask some questions while the older students practiced clearly explaining their science fair concepts to younger students.  The PYP students will engage with their own science fair inquiry process later in the term. 

The Science 12 class led students in an engaging role play to demonstrate the development of antibiotic resistance and the spread of Tuberculosis in crowded places. 

The 7/8 class used some of the newly donated physical science equipment during their lab. A dynamics track with a force-acceleration sensor mounted on a smart cart can be used to explore how force, mass, and acceleration are mathematically related.

In a problem-based learning challenge, the Science 9 students used their knowledge of electrostatics and the scientific method to determine how the amount of charge on the rod and the mass of foil in an electroscope affect how far apart the pieces of foil will separate from each other. 
In an inquiry-driven process, students explored the concepts of capacitance and electrostatic charge while developing an electrophorus, using it to transfer a charge to a storage device called a Leyden jar, and then using the stored charge to light a small neon lamp. ​

​AcadeCap School has won the Safe Drinking Water Foundation’s 2022-2023 Student Action on Canadian Water Attitudes Competition and one of the two $3000 grand prize packages consisting of several water quality testing kits and a water bottle filling station!

As part of a larger collaborative water project for science class, grade 7, 8, 9 students created an educational panel display with takeaway information sheets and table activities. The project aimed to increase awareness of environmental issues related to the Ottawa River, the source of drinking water in Ottawa. The key issues were identified from a survey that was sent to AcadeCap families earlier in the year.  The display was shared with AcadeCap families during the intermission at our Night of Theatre event on March 9th. During the March break, we will also lend the display to Lee Valley Tools for their staff room.   Our analysis of the ‘Water Attitudes Survey’ will be available for viewing during the AcadeCap Science Fair in early April. By the way, it was Spirit Week Pajama Day on the day we took this photo!
